Darwin - a city of urban art

Updated: Aug 4

Darwin, the capital of the Northern Territory, has become over the years, a great city to experience beautiful urban art. At carparks, building walls, empty blocks and street lanes, you can see remarkable urban art.

My favourite is the one painted inside a car park using the back of the Roma Bar Cafe wall in Cavanagh St. It shows the iconic historic moment when after years of struggle, Gough Whitlam handed over the land to the Gurinji, the traditional owners. At the handover ceremony, Whitlam pour red sand on the open hand of Vincent Lingiari the leader of the struggle to regain their traditional lands addressing a long standing injustice.

I’d like to acknowledge the Wurundjeri Woi Wurrung people as the traditional owners and true sovereigns of the land where I live. I like to pay my respects to elders past and present. Sovereignty has not been ceded, treaties have not been signed.

I like to extend the acknowledgement to other traditional owners in Australia, Latin America and other parts of the world.
